Dear Editor,
Service
learning is the method of teaching, learning and reflecting through
active participation in meaningful community service.
Our
passion for this pedagogy is a simple reflection of our core principal
of 'service above self', and this year we have furthered our 40+ years
of youth-oriented activities to become the first Rotary club in
California to sponsor an EarlyAct club.
EarlyAct
is a program geared for elementary students, and augments Rotary's
effort to provide young people with opportunities to serve their
communities. Our EarlyAct was founded at Adams School this past
September under the helpful guidance of teachers Gayle Labrana and
Lauren Tahl, and was initiated by Suzie Swenson, our current president.
Adams School has been a treasured partner of the Rotary Club of Santa
Barbara North for the past 18 years.
So
far, EarlyAct has donated books and movies in Spanish for children at
Cottage Hospital, pizza and birthday gifts to children at Transition
House, and are currently working on a picture-pal program with orphans
in Sri Lanka. These children are motivated, joyful, and have a very
developed sense of responsibility to self and others.
The
landscape of education changes when children get to put their knowledge
into practice. What has been achieved this year is a forum for
empowering our youth. We feel tremendous pride and confidence in these
young citizens, and will continue to mentor them into the future
through programs like Youth Act (junior high), Interact (high school),
and Roteract (20's - 30's). Best Regards, The Rotary Club of Santa
Barbara North
